fighting fear

Fighting Fear is a brand new feature documentary on big wave surfers Mark Matthews and Richie Vaculik. This isn’t just the next surf bio-film that hits the shelves 5 or 6 times a year, its on a whole new level. The crew and coin behind this movie length doco is up there. For starters they use state of the art “Phantom” slow mo cameras (they cost thousands of dollars just to rent for one day) This is no budget backyard surf flick. The footage these cameras shoot is impressive to say the least. Shiptearns bluff in high quality slow mo is worth the price of the film alone. This film is not only about surfing, it shows the deep bond between these two guys and Richie’s forays into the world of professional cage fighting, yeah I know weird mix, fighting and surfing but it makes for a story like Ive never seen before.

The action is full tilt, the stories are amusing and sometimes disturbing but you seem to be on the edge of your seat the whole time, wondering what these boys get up to next. The mash between documentary, feature movie, surf movie and fight movie is somehow blended in together to make sense with plenty of flow. The acted out scenes from when the two guys were kids was extremely well done and the interviews throughout tell there stories with a ton of truth even if they do come off looking like they made some horribly wrong decisions in their lives.

Best bit was when Mark Matthews (biggest of wave charger of the last few years) admits to being that scared surfing 2-foot waves when he was a kid that his mum had to swim out and bring him back to shore… now look at him..there is hope for us all to over come our fears in life. Its a very polished production with a story worth hearing and a moral to be heard that you can turn your life around from some dark moments. Garage entertain sell this movie through their website ….
