Stoked and broke is a humorous but inspiring film that is all about surfing stoke and doing what’s necessary for maximum time in the ocean. This is a documentary surf film, unlike most surf video releases which are just a bunch of surf action footage put to music (this style of course has it’s place) but stoked and broke has had a lot more thought go into it.
Basically it’s an 8 day – 30 mile journey through California by foot. Cyrus Sutton and Ryan Burch are stoked surfers who leave on their epic trip after hand making their own bamboo rickshaws (a contraption worth checking out) they load the rickshaw with surfboards mainly but there is also some crude cooking equipment, a few blankets, wetsuits and zero dollars in their pockets.
Their little scams to make small amounts of coin along the way are mostly hilarious but sometimes clever. As with most journeys, it’s the people you meet along the way and these boys definitly run into a few characters. As it says on the back cover “what begins as a minimalist surfing journey quickly becomes an examination of freedom vs alienation and this is very well told through the characters life stories, there’s some absolute gold amongst it all.
There is plenty of surfing and it’s all super interesting. There is no modern shortboarding in this film. They ride logs, fishes and chunks of un-glassed foam with no fins and do some pretty rad body surfing. Ryan Burch’s finless surfing is some of the best I’ve seen, this dude looks like he hasn’t a care in the world, he is just out there making the most of every moment he finds himself in.
My favourite bit was when the pair visited a dude named Glen Horn and his partner. These guys were really inspiring, they were soooo salty, they lived their lives to the fullest and looked to have it made, while living big red van…. really cool story.
Stoked & Broke is a super rad film. I’ve being a massive fan of Cyrus Sutton’s blog (Korduroy TV) since it started a few years back and to see its core elements mashed into a little surf documentary made for some good quality watching…. I’m giving it 5 stars!! Check out the trailer below
