coastal soul album release

Local lads Phil Klaus, Jamie Martin and Chris Barrow of Coastal Soul have released their debut album “Everyday people”. If you are from the Coffs area, there’s a good chance you will know one of these blokes, or at the very least seen them playing at one of the clubs or pubs around here. All of em are super friendly dudes who just love doing what they do. When the album was finished and release a few weeks back they sent us a copy to listen to and I’ve had it spinning in the car stereo a fair bit. It’s warm, cruisey tunes can’t help but put you in a good mood. I caught up with Jamie from the band recently and to find out more about the journey of this album.

How long did the process take?

Starting working on it in September 2010 and spent around 2 months writing, rehearsing, re-writing and fine tuning the 10 songs we wanted to record. We always wanted to make a full length album straight up because we didn’t think an E.P. would have showcased the variety of songs we have.

We recorded 3 songs in one day @ Rocking Horse Studios, Byron Bay in early Jan 2011. That was a massive day and the editing was a little rushed but we were still stoked with what we achieved in the studio in such a short time. Phil had previously recorded an EP with local band, Cycle of Fifths, but Chris and I were  both recording studio rookies.
We were then recommended to try a local studio, Scratch and Bite. We recorded the song Deep Ocean, in around 4 hours and it came out really well. We decided to record the rest of the album with Muzz @ Scratch and Bite and did so over the next 2 months.
I got a call from a friend who is doing a audio engineer course in Byron @ SAE Studios and he offered to record one of our songs for free as part of an assignment. We missioned up the highway and in a little over 5 hours recorded the track, Kaleidoscope.
All in all the whole thing took around six months and was a massive learning experience for us all. Although we are busy trying to get as many copies out there as possible we are already planning our next album which will probably take shape over the summer of 2011-2012.
