Julian Wilson – Scratching the surface – film review

Profiles movies….everyone is doing em, so it was only a matter of time before the young superstar from the quiksilver stable got his own.

Julian has the “surfing mainstream” idea of a saleable package all sewn up. His blonde hair, tanned skin and good looks are just the extras, its his dynamic surfing style and grounded personality that are, thankfully, what has put Julian into the position of one of the most marketable surfers in the world right now.

so what’s it like?

Put basically this new movie will sell!! The camera work is amazing, they use some of the best equipment currently available and the production is squeaky clean. This movie should appeal to most age groups. Its got plenty of action for the groms (especially if you like forehand air reverses… there’s a million of em) it also has a smorgasbord of perfect waves from all over the world, great for the surf dreamer who can drift off to places like Hawaii, Indo, West Oz, Europe and Africa and there is some killer lifestyle footage for those that are into the photographic or visual side of things, the scene’s in Europe and Africa are definite highlights for this little photographer.

soundtrack

The soundtrack has some really cool indie tracks throughout, which suits the movie quite well, although the Hawaii section has an early 90′s sounding punk song which would be right at home in a momentum video and there’s also a metal track which doesn’t really flow with the movie too well, apart from these two its a well chosen song list.

extras that are as good as the movie

The extras are great! they call them “webisodes”. I think a few of these should have been included in the actual movie. They give a really good insight into Julian’s life and personality. Maybe they could have found room, if they cut the drunk Taj Burrows scene….. not sure why that bit got run in a profile movie about Julian (it must have been funny on the boat at the time I guess)

Wrap up

This movie will get you pumped and inspired. It’s got epic surfing, epic waves and epic camera work…. what more could you ask for in a surfing flick about a 21 year old rising star??…. scroll down to see the trailer.
