Melali – Machado film review

Melali is a Taylor Steele/Rob Machado film that follows hot on the heels of the much hyped Drifter movie that was released late last year. For those that haven’t seen or heard about the Drifter, It was basically a film about Rob Machado “finding himself” in Indonesia. The camera work was insane and the waves were mind blowing, probably the only flaw to it as a surf film was the lack of surfing. They would show 3 incredible waves from a session and then move on to these set-up adventures of him tripping through Indo. This movie did leave you wanting to see more of the surfing action and this is where the latest film “Melali” comes into play.

Frame grabs from the new “Melali” vid

it’s about the waves man

Melali is all about the waves and waveriding talents of surfers like Dane Reynolds, Kelly Slater, Dan Malloy, Shane Dorian….. and of course the main man Rob Machado. I could watch Rob surf all day long, but I couldn’t listen to him talk all day long, so for this reason I would definitely watch Melali many more times than the Drifter.

you will find Rob in the barrel for most of this movie

it’s got the goods

They did save the best waves for the Drifter, but there are plenty of high quality leftovers. The backlit green barrels in one of the sessions sends you into sensory overload. It’s dynamic lighting in a perfect lefthand reef break is some of the most beautiful footage shot. Rob has one of the coolest styles going around and his ability to just stand in a barrel without noticeably weaving and still come out of some super deep barrels is something worth watching many times over..

The entire soundtrack was scored by Rob and his good mate Jon Swift and it fits the surfing like a glove

This film puts you in a good state of mind and makes you wanna just go and hang out in Indo for a few months…. I liked it…. multiple watcher for sure! check out the trailer below. Available at Coopers surf or online at Vas entertainment
